Why it is time to leave the paper loyalty card behind

The cardboard stamp card has done real service, but it costs more than it seems: lost cards, unmeasured visits, a dated image. Here is the honest reckoning on paper, and a method for switching to digital without unsettling your regulars.

A likeable ritual, an outdated tool

The stamp on the card is part of the folklore of local shops, and one quality must be granted to it: everyone understands. But a loyalty tool has one job, bringing customers back. And at that job, the paper card fails silently, for a simple reason: the card is never there at the right moment.

Try it for a week: count the customers who, at the moment of paying, look for their card, cannot find it and leave with an “I forgot it”. Each of those moments is a visit lost to your programme, and a small disappointment for the customer, who eventually stops believing in it.

The costs you do not see

Paper seems free because it is cheap per unit. Its real costs lie elsewhere:

What paper will never tell you

Paper's biggest flaw is not what it costs, it is what it hides. With paper cards, you will never know:

So you steer blind something meant to be a commercial tool. A digital loyalty card, by contrast, counts every confirmed visit: your dashboard tells you how many customers are active, who comes back and how often. These are not statistics for their own sake: they are what let you adjust the threshold, the reward, and reach out to the right people.

The question of image

Your customers pay contactlessly, receive their train ticket on their phone and their boarding pass in their Wallet. The dog-eared card at the bottom of the wallet tells another story: a business that has not moved. Conversely, a clean card, in your colours, appearing in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet next to the bank card, puts your shop in the same pocket as the most polished brands, at no cost.

This is not modernity for its own sake: it is the signal sent at every trip to the till, dozens of times a day.

Making the transition smoothly

Going digital is not done against your regulars, but with them. The method that works:

What you gain from the first month

Concretely: no more forgotten cards (the phone is always there), visits finally counted, a smoother counter (scanning takes about two seconds), and the ability to talk to your customers directly on their card.

If you want to test without risk, Digikart offers a free plan, with no bank card and no cap on customers: enough to run the transition at your own pace, in real conditions. The practical questions (compatibility, older customers, scanning time) are covered in the FAQ, and the full approach is explained on the why Digikart page.
